Vocabulary

nostalgia – feeling of missing old times

e.g. Chen is nostalgic about when he was a little boy and could put off fireworks during Chinese New Year.

war-zone – a zone, a place where a war is going on

e.g. Walking around in Beijing during Chinese New Year felt like walking around in a war-zone because of all the fireworks.

don’t cross the line – don’t go overboard, don’t exaggerate too much

e.g. A lot of people cross the line when it comes to fireworks safety.

ambiance – atmosphere

e.g. There’s no New Year’s atmosphere during Chinese New Year without the fireworks. The ambiance is completely different.

well-read – someone who reads a lot and knows a lot

e.g. My friend reads ten books a month and he knows the answer to every question I ask him! He’s really well-read.

cultured – someone who knows a lot about cultural things such as arts or literature

e.g. My friend is really cultures. She goes to a different museum every week.

illiterate – someone who can’t write or read

e.g. There aren’t that many illiterate people in the modern world anymore: a lot of people are taught how to read and write nowadays.
