Recently, a game has gone viral on social media, Pokemon Go. It is based on a Japanese animation and utilizes AR (augmented reality) technology. People can catch virtual pokemons in real world through the game. Crazy things are continuously happening, someone tried to enter the police office to get a pokemon, one man tried to enter a female bathroom for it, and someone fell into a river and died because he was too focused on the game. It made “Otaku”, who always stays at home and plays video games or watch animation, go outside and walk over 20 thousand steps. Also, the stock of Nintendo, who developed this game, has raised 25% in one day because of it. The player and the capitalist are all crazy for it.
Actually, there was another similar game created by Mini Cooper, which also utilized the AR tech and encouraged users to find a virtual vehicle and prevented it from being caught by others. The winner could get a real Mini Cooper. The incentive was attractive enough, but it didn’t draw much attention. The difference of these two game is the “IP” (intellectual property), Pokémon. It’s our generation’s memory, and we all wanted to be the characters in it. Now, there is a game providing an opportunity to fulfill our childhood dreams, would you play it?
