briefly (adv): 1-for a short time:
E.g.: We chatted briefly about the weather.
E.g.: She appears briefly in the new Bond film.
E.g.: He was briefly famous in his twenties but then sank into obscurity.

brief (adj): 1- lasting only a short time or containing few words:
E.g.: His acceptance speech was mercifully brief.
E.g.: I had a brief look at her report before the meeting.

common law (n): 1-the legal system in England and most of the US that has developed over a period of time from old customs and court decisions, rather than laws made by politicians

Civil law/Continental law (n): a legal system based on ancient Roman law, which is used in many countries. In this system a court makes decisions based on a set of recorded laws rather than on the decision of a judge or jury:
E.g.: Thailand’s legal system is based on civil law, so the case may not be treated as a precedent by other bankruptcy judges.

precedent (n): 1-an action, situation, or decision that has already happened and can be used as a reason why a similar action or decision should be performed or made:
E.g.: There are several precedents for promoting people who don’t have formal qualifications.

precedent (n): [LAW], a decision about a particular legal case that makes it likely that other similar cases will be decided in the same way:
E.g.: The judgment on pension rights has established/set a precedent.
