F2F Class Notes April 17th (Ben)

The public was angry after the video was exposed, they criticized what UA did to that Asian passenger, and got backlashed in terms of the speech/statement by UA CEO afterwards.

On my Wechat moments, the video was forwarded frequently and widely, and people expressed their anger to UA. I was angry with it at the beginning. However, it made me remember another news we heard 2 days ago. A woman had a furious quarrel with a man because of car driving. In the video, the woman kept abusing that man.

Most people criticized that she was so rude and ill-bred. However, the story was changed the next day, people were told the truth about why she was so angry and abused him. People who criticized her turned against him. Though the woman coped with him in an inappropriate way, the man was cunning and he took advantage of people’s anger, he hid the truth.

Now we know whatever right UA has, they were definitely  wrong. But both news led me to think. Currently, the press reports what they want the public to know, but not the truth. Many press like to attract the attention from the public, but are blinded by the truth. They are losing their credibility.

I think we need stay sensitive to such news, and question them. We should take news with a grain of salt (=not believe blindly)

Try to hear different voices and dig for the truth if we’d like to know it. Anyway, try not to be impacted by emotions, be objective and do not parrot. We need fairness but we need justice more.
