In the new year there is a unique Korean traditional culture.
In the morning we perform sebae , a traditional formal bow and greeting of respect to our parents. They give us well-wishing remarks and new year`s cash gifts. Children use the money to buy new school supplies. Because korean school semester starts on march. After many Korean family hold a memorial service for their ancestors. We do that two times at Newyear and Thanks giving seson. It begins with preparing food for ancestral rites table. While daugther in law including the grown up son`s mother prepare foods for ancestral rites table Men play pocker or watch TV. It occure conflict between mother in law and daughter in law thesedays. Many mother in law have been doing it naturally for long time and they`ve been thinking daughter in law have to do this too. But Korean younger generation women think it is unfair. Because the ancestral is not theirs, it is the husband`s ancestors. Even the statistics show the divorce rate increase highly after new year holiday and thanks giving holiday. Fortunately Christian don`t do the memorial service. Korean church prohibit to worship other things or people instead of God according to the Bible. That`s why I have no holiday stress which is most of Korean women have. All of these problem causes by Korean male chauvinism. Now we fight with that and as we got older, it will change to visit the cemetaries and enjoy the holidays.
