Vocabulary
synonym – two words that have the same meaning
e.g. Coworker and colleague are synonyms.
duty-free shop – a shop where you don’t have to pay taxes on things
e.g. Chuyi is going to the new duty-free shop in Shanghai next week.
skull – the head of a skeleton. The bones in the head
e.g. Chuyi made cupcakes for Halloween two years ago. She drew skulls on them to make them scary!
skeleton – the whole of the bones in the body
e.g. A skeleton’s head is called a skull.
properly – correctly, in a good way
e.g. When Chuyi wears a tight dress, she can’t breathe properly.
to doll up – to get really pretty
e.g. Girls like to get dolled up before they go out.
fascinated –Â interested, attracted to, amazed by something, …
e.g. Chuyi is fascinated by the English language, she says.
expat – someone who goes abroad for work
to smear – when something gets messy and dirty
e.g. When Tanya wears mascara and it rains, her mascara smears all over her face.
slang – “cool” words young people use
e.g. Chillax is an example of slang
Corrections
If you go abroad within six months you can buy things at the duty-free shop – If you went abroad with six months you can buy things at the duty-free shop
People make up themselves as ghosts – People dress up as ghosts
