Vocabulary
Skinny (n): 1- very thin.
E.g.: You should eat more – you’re too skinny.
Skinny Jeans (n): 1- tight-fitting jeans with very narrow legs.
E.g.: She was wearing skinny jeans and a plain black T-shirt.
Surveillance (n): 1- the careful watching of a person or place, especially by the police or army, because of a crime that has happened or is expected.
E.g.: The police have kept the nightclub under surveillance because of suspected illegal drug activity.
Halt (v): 1- to (cause to) stop moving or doing something or happening.
E.g.: Production has halted at all of the company’s factories because of the pay dispute.
Policy (n): 1- a set of ideas or a plan of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed to officially by a group of people, a business organization, a government, or a political party.
E.g.: They believe that Europe needs a common foreign and security policy.
Priority (n): 1- something that is very important and must be dealt with before other things:
E.g.: The management did not seem to consider office safety to be a priority.
Rubber-stamp (v): 1- to officially approve a decision or plan.
E.g.: The boss makes the decisions and the committee just rubber-stamps them.
Apparently (adv): 1- used to say you have read or been told something although you are not certain it is true:
E.g.: Apparently it’s going to rain today.
Naturally (adv): 1- as you would expect:
E.g.: Naturally we want to see as few job losses in the industry as possible.
Tribe (n): 1- a group of people, often of related families, who live together, sharing the same language, culture, and history, especially those who do not live in towns or cities:
E.g.: He was part of a tribe of Amazonian Indians
Consolidate (v): 1- to become, or cause something to become, stronger, and more certain:
E.g.: The success of their major product consolidated the firm’s position in the market.
Crack down (v): 1– to start dealing with bad or illegal behavior in a more severe way:
E.g.: The government is cracking down on indoor smoking in Shanghai.
Stifle (v): 1- to prevent something from happening, being expressed, or continuing.
E.g.: I don’t know how I managed to stifle my anger.
Dissent (n): 1- a strong difference of opinion on a particular subject, especially about an official suggestion or plan or a popular belief.
E.g.: When the time came to approve the proposal, there were one or two voices of dissent.
