Vocabulary

Sack (v): 1- to remove someone from a job, usually because they have done something wrong or badly.
E.g.: They sacked her for being late.

Fixture congestion (n): 1- a sports term describing a team playing too many matches in a short period of time.
E.g.: They fear that the exhaustion caused by the fixture congestion would lead the team to defeat.

Fatigue (n): 1- extreme tiredness.
E.g.: She was suffering from fatigue.

Counter-attack (n): 1- an attack made in response to one by an opponent.
E.g.: General MacArthur launched a counter-attack.

Substitute (v): 1- to use something or someone instead of another thing or person.
E.g.: You can substitute oil for butter in this recipe.

By far: 1- by a great amount.
E.g.: This is by far the largest city in the area

Unbeaten (adj): 1- in sports, having won every game.
E.g.: Manchester United remain unbeaten this season so far.

Contrast (n): 1- an obvious difference between two or more things.
E.g.: I like the contrast of the white trousers with the black jacket.

No-man’s Land (n): 1- a situation or area of activity where there are no rules, or that no one understands or controls because it belongs neither to one type nor another.
E.g.: The families of people who die in custody are in a legal no-man’s-land when they try to discover what went wrong.

Resurgence (n): 1- a new increase of activity or interest in a particular subject or idea that had been forgotten for some time.
E.g.: The new policies have led to a resurgence of the local economy.
