E.g. Wait… I lost my train of thought. = I know what we’re talking about, but I forgot what I was going to say about it.

the last straw = a (small) action which finally triggers a reaction after it has been repeating itself for a period of time

For two summers, a man who sang in a tree outside my Brooklyn apartment was a wacky bit of the neighborhood that stayed the same as new restaurants and wine shops continued sprouting up.
Simplified:
For two summers, a man was a crazy part of the neighborhood that didn’t change while new fancy places continued appeared.
