Caipirinha – a Brazilian drink made with lime and sugar that is comparable to a Mojito

Connotation – the feelings associated with a word

Ex. The word “dark” has a negative connotation.

Cliché – noun and adjective; something that is overused and predictable.

Ex. He’s strong as an ox/horse.

Expressions


To go out means to go to clubs and bars, usually on Friday nights.

The word underground can refer to something that is not out in the open (not literally underneath the ground).

To hit on someone means to express sexual interest in someone; this usually happens in clubs and bars when someone compliments another person and ask them on a date. Having a crush on someone means being attracted to someone, but does not show any action (feelings only); this phrase has an immature-sounding connotation. Usually children have crushes on each other.

The difference between something to drink and a drink: If someone offers to buy you a drink, they usually mean an alcoholic drink. If someone offers you something to drink¸ it is normally non-alcoholic.

A pick-up line is something that someone says to initiate a conversation with a person they are attracted to, 搭讪.

Ex. “Did it hurt when you fell down from heaven?” “Do you have a map, because I got lost in your eyes?” “Hey, I lost my number, can I have yours?”

To check someone out means to appreciate someone’s attractiveness.
