Vocabulary

tanning lotion – lotion you put on when you’re tanning that makes you tan faster

e.g. I put on a lot of tanning lotion while I was at the beach, but I still didn’t tan much!

to tan – when your skin gets darker because of the sun

e.g. A lot of Western women like to tan.

tanlines – the lines you see when parts of your skin got darker but other parts didn’t. Usually because you wore an item of clothing so you couldn’t tan underneath.

e.g. I got terrible tanlines from my weekend at the beach.

thermals – clothing you wear underneath your normal clothing to stay warm

e.g. In winter, I usually wear a thermal underneath my sweater because otherwise I’ll get too cold.

to melt – èžåŒ–

e.g. When it’s too warm, ice melts into water.

strokes – 笔画

e.g. In traditional Chinese writing, there’s a lot more strokes than in simplified Chinese.

to magnify – 放大

e.g. Sometimes I can’t read the Chinese word properly from a distance, so I have to magnify it on screen.

magnifier – 放大镜

e.g. My dad sometimes uses a magnifier just to read the newspaper.

to minimise – 缩å°

e.g.

radicals – The building blocks of the Chinese language (three drops of water in æ²³ signifies water)

e.g.  Learning radicals helps you learn Chinese a lot.

exposure – æ›å…‰

e.g. It’s really important to get as much exposure as you can in that new language that you’re learning.

to make things up – to fantasise, to lie, to make fiction

e.g. Writers are constantly making things up to write about.

e.g. I want you to write a text in English and it can be about anything, you could even make up a story if you like.
