Vocabulary

Laos – 老挝

Radical – the building blocks of the Chinese language (河,三点水+可)

e.g. It’s much easier to learn Chinese if you’re aware of what the radicals in the character mean.

You’re on fire! (expression) – you’re doing very well

e.g. She scored ten times in a row, she’s on fire!

Simplified Chinese – simplified Chinese is used in mainland China and uses less strokes than traditional Chinese writing

Traditional Chinese – traditional Chinese is used in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau and uses much more strokes than simplified Chinese.

e.g. It’s much easier to learn simplified Chinese than traditional Chinese.

Strokes – 笔画

e.g. There’s a lot more strokes in traditional Chinese than in simplified Chinese.

to monitor – to check up, to track

e.g. In a lot of piano classes, parents can join the class and monitor their kids’ progress.
