Email Service Notes 1st April (Tony)

April 1st is a special day to me, that’s not because it is April Fool’s Day, but Leslie Zhang (we usually call him “Ge Ge” in Chinese—Elder Brother), a very nice, versatile, considerate and exquisite man. He is a prominent singer and actor in the world.

Time is fleeing, I still remembered when I heard that he was dead, I was sitting in my seat of high school, and was ready to my morning reading. I felt unreal at that moment, it was April 1st, maybe it’s just a joke I thought.

So sad, I guessed wrong; and how ironic, people told the truth in Fool’s Day.

He jumped from a hotel without any sign before, we knew he got melancholia, but we also knew he was getting better and better.

I am a fan of him, and I admire him. There is limited vocabularies to describe how good is his personal character, how exquisite is his life and how wonderful is his songs and movies. He created many perfect roles to us from his movies, when I watched his movie “Farewell, My Concubine”, I cannot stop weeping for him, or his role in the movie.

On every April 1st, many people use their own way to memorialize him, there are many flowers, gifts, and candles around that hotel. It has been for 14 years since he suicided in 2003. However, I feel that he has never leave us, but aside with us always, very gently and carefully, like the breeze in Spring, the rain in Autumn.

I miss you, Ge Ge, hope you are free to live, love and laugh now.
