diet – everything you eat

eg: The diet of a Grizzly bear is mostly Salmon.

stumbled – to walk not carefully and almost fall, trip

eg: He was drunk and stumbled home.

eg: I stumbled and almost fell down.

eg: He was stumbling over his own words, not making any sense.

literal – from writing, from the dictionary’s meaning of the word. Direct meaning.

eg: I’m so cool. The weather is great today and that breeze(light wind) is taking away the heat.

eg: I literally had to wait on the subway for 2 hours.

eg: There were literally a million people at that party. (Misused)

figurative – the idea of a word, the abstract meaning, and generally how people use the word, maybe slang

eg: Americans often speak in very figurative sentences, sometimes we need to ask a few clarifying questions.

eg: By blow up, do you mean literally or figuratively?

eg: I mean literally blow up, it is going to explode.

eg: I mean figuratively blow up, it will become very popular very quickly.  Their business is going to blow up after they launch the new product.

Speaking exercise

I could wear tshirt, eat ice cream. But now, I thnk Harbin is a city far behind the time, it developed too slow, I think. The economy is not very good and people like stable life, people are tend to like stable life, they don’t want to have a challenge or change. In conclusion, I like it because it is my hometown and I will never forget it but maybe I will not return to my hometown because I begin to feel uncomfortable living there. The weather, the space, the pace of life/the lifestyle and the opportunity is… that’s all.
