Vocabulary
gesture – an act that shows your feelings or attitude
eg: It’s not about the coffee, it’s about the gesture.
eg: I appreciate the gesture.
eg: That’s a thoughtful gesture, but I’m good. 3
empty gesture – to say something without an intention of actually doing it. Making an offer that is not intended to be fulfilled or even taken up by someone.
eg: Unfortunately Americans have the bad habit of making too many empty gestures. In fact they are probably not real plans, just a suggestion.
beat around the bush – to talk about something for a while without saying the real point
eg: I don’t really like beating around the bush, I’d rather just speak directly.
a catch – a special and unfavorable condition, that is often not said in the beginning.
eg: What’s the catch?
The catch is, I will buy you the car, but you have to pick it up in America.
eg: This seems too good to be true, there must be a catch.
toxic – containing poisonous substances, very unpleasant, becoming worse and worse
eg: That plant is toxic, don’t eat it.
eg: It was a toxic relationship, things were only getting worse, so she left him.
