Today we focused on:
The Effects of Lying
Vocabulary
intensive care/ICU – department in the hospital that supports patients whose lives are in immediate danger
mental health – the condition of the mind
ex. Lying can lead to serious mental health effects.
personal gain – to benefit from a situation
pulling a sickie/called in sick – to say that you got sick so that you can take a day off
ex. She pulled a sickie/called in sick this morning because she woke up late.
get a kick from sth or sbd – to get a sense of enjoyment or amusement from something
ex. She really gets a kick from lying to her classmates.
ex. Even as an adult, I still get a kick from going to the amusement park.
punishment – get in trouble
favourable – likeable/agreeable
ex. George lied to make himself more favourable among his friends.
spare somebody’s feelings – keep/protect the other person from getting hurt from what you say
ex. I spared my friend’s feelings when she asked me whether she looked good in that dress.
Speaking exercise
That no one may trust you and it may hurt your health.
(She said) That no one will trust you and it may hurt/damage your health.
Lying is not good, and I understand an example, and she said that a friend, she told you that she have no time to watch movie with you. But, you saw her went shopping with other people and I don’t trust her.
Lying is not good, and based on what I understand from an example, she said that a friend told her that she had no time to watch a movie with her. But, she saw her friend shopping with other people and she doesn’t trust her friend now.

She don’t know she can’t think very well and I can’t say “You think too.. so I always tell you got a progress”
She doesn’t know that she can’t sing very well and I couldn’t bring myself to say “You sing badly/You don’t sing well, so I always tell you that you have progressed”
The last part tells that the big lies comes from the small lies and it’s like a snowball and will become bigger and bigger.
