Grammar

Past simple tense and Past continuous tense were practiced as the two tenses used to tell stories in English.
***Past Simple

Main events in the story which is always talking about past events are described within Past Simple tense in English. For example:

Yesterday I woke up late for school. On the way to school, there was a car accident on the road, so I got to school very late,….. .

In past simple verbs change. We have 2 types of verbs:

regular(add “ed”):
walk——>past——>walked

talk——->past——->talked

irregular(no rule for change):

go——>past——>went

do——>past——->did

eat——>past——>ate

In past, verb changes for everyone the same way:

I went to school by bus yesterday.
She went to school by bus yesterday.

and it will be same for all other pronouns.

******* This part hasn’t been mentioned to the student as the purpose is to how to make sentences and tell a story in English. But if student is interested, can read further. She already knows them.

Questions and negative form of the sentence are made by “did”:

Did you go to school by bus yesterday?

Yes, I did. I went to school by bus yesterday.

No, I didn’t. I didn’t go to school by bus yesterday.

***********

**Past continuous:

When we are telling the story, if we are going to talk about a very specific moment in the past while another main action is continuing, we use Past Continuous:

I was doing the dishes when my mom came back home.
Past continuous is made by was,were+verb ing (gerund or ing form of the verb):

I was doing my homework,….

You were watching movie,…

She was talking to me,…

He was playing basketball,…

We were shopping,…

They were waiting for the bus,…

It was raining when I reached home.

To make it negative we just add not:

Were you doing your homework last night?

No, I wasn’t. I was watching TV.

Yes, I was. I was doing my homework.
