MUJI is a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods. MUJI’s design philosophy is minimalist that it emphasis on reducing production and packaging waste, “no-logo” or “no-brand” policy, and recycling. The brand name MUJI is derived from the first Japanese brand name which is translated as no-brand quality goods in 1980. Its no-brand strategy means that little money is spent on advertisement or marketing, and its success is attributed to word of mouth, a simple and relaxing shopping experience. MUJI ha attractive to customers who prefer unbranded but good quality products. Besides, MUJI product design is also one of its brand identity. For example, MUJI products have a limited color range, and most colors they use often are black, white, grey, brown, dark red, blue and green. Normally you can rarely see bright colors like yellow, pink, orange, etc. Moreover, the products are displayed on shelves with minimal packaging that displaying only functional information and price tag. It is very hard to see plastic bags or over-packaging products in MUJI shops because they are waste of resources and prices in the brand’s philosophy. When a customer finishes shopping and checks out, all the products will be put in a good quality kraft paper bag with only MUJI logo on it.
