Hi, Jesse! I am Lucas, I am a bartender who serves drinks behind a bar and I have been a bartender for seven years. My first bartender job was at lost heaven which is a yunnan style restaurant and bar on the bund. I was lucky that I met my mixologist master George who was the bar advisor. In 2012, I won the cocktail competition of “absolute master class”, which was a good journey for me because before I was too shy to show myself. In 2014, I left lost heaven where I had worked for 4 years, after that I continued my bartending job at le baron which is a night club on donghu road (which was a club at the corner of donghu lu and hengshan lu). Night clubs are different to cocktail-lounge bars. It was too busy so we needed to / had to rush and nobody cared about the quality of the drinks. At the night club, we were not mixologists, we were bar guys to mix terrible drinks for guests, and also we used to finish work at 5:30~6 in the morning, which was not suitable for me, so I quit. After that I started to work out at the gym and then I traveled to kunming, Dali and lijiang for a long rest / to take a break. After Chinese New Year, I came back to Shanghai and got a new bar manager job, I thought I was not strong enough for my job, especially regarding / in terms of my spoken English / my English level. So I decided to learn English because I want to do my job well. I love my job because I love mixology! Thanks, Jesse!

Vocabulary

In terms of your grammar, your English is good. But, in terms of your pronunciation, it’s just OK.

eg. I used to work at a nightclub and we used to work overtime every weekend.

off work (adj)
eg. I am off work at 8pm
eg2. I will be off work at 10

You have to do it
You had to do it
You should do it
You needed to do it / you should have done it

You can do it but you don’t need to / you don’t have to

English style bar-tending places more importance on quality and service. But, American style places more importance on flair.

The main difference between English style and American style is quality and speed.

Flair style bar-tending is less and less common in China

common < > rare
eg. drinking coffee in America is common but drinking coffee in china is rare

what did you get up to? / what did you do?
how was your day? / how’s today?

and you? / what about you? / how about you?

last name / family name / surname

first name / given name
