Open F2F Class Notes November 20th (Ben)

live up to = meet someone’s expectations

It was great, but it didn’t live up to my expectations.

immerse = to put completely in water

It’s hard to immerse in a 3D movie.

The best way to learn English is to spend time abroad in total immersion (in the culture)

“cultural immersion”

detailed

The images were very sharp and detailed but the experience wasn’t immersive enough.

special effects

It wasn’t a blockbuster so there weren’t many special effects.

cinematographic = of the cinema, of movies

My roommates and I have different cinematographic tastes.

Original version

A cruel movie

We saw the Li an’s new movie, Bill Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which is called the first movie by using 120 frames per second technology.

I have to comment this movie from two ways, the technology and the story.
The technology didn’t live up to my expectations. It was too detailed to immerse myself into the story. I could see every hair in actors’ face and it was like they were just in front of me, face to face, but saying their lines. On the other hand, their face was too big in the screen, which coursed a kind of uncomfortable feeling and disturbed me to understand the story.

Aside from the technology, the story was much better than the comments by people who had seen the movie. It told of a young soldier and his mates came back from the battlefield and took part in a halftime show of a football game. The director wanted to remove the surface and tell people the cruel truth, there were really no one that really respected soldiers, people just wanted to hear the stories they wanted to hear. The business men just cared about businesses and tried to take advantage of their stories to make money. The cheerleader whom Bill Lynn met with when he participated in the show, just think he was a hero, and she was surprised when Bill Lynn indicated that he wanted to run away. No one really cares about their life in the battlefield and how is their feeling. As one of a characters in the movie said, people move on, they will not remember you just after two or three days late. That’s what Li An wants to tell us. A cruel story.

A cruel movie

We saw the Li An’s new movie, Bill Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which is said to be the first movie by using a 120 frames per second technology.

I have to comment this movie from two perspectives, the technology and the story.
The technology didn’t live up to my expectations. It was too detailed to immerse myself into the story. I could see every hair in actors’ faces and it was like they were just in front of me, face to face, but saying their lines. On the other hand, their face was too big on the screen, which caused a kind of uncomfortable feeling and disturbed me in understanding the story.

Aside from the technology, the story was much better than the comments from people who had seen the movie. It told the story of a young soldier and his mates coming back from the battlefield and taking part in a halftime show at a football game.

The director wanted to get rid of appearances and tell people the cruel truth, that there was no one that really respected soldiers, and that people just wanted to hear the stories they wanted to hear. The business men just cared about business and tried to take advantage of their stories to make money. The cheerleader whom Bill Lynn met with when he participated in the show just thought he was a hero and she was surprised when he hinted that he wanted to run away.

No one really cares about their life on the battlefield and what their feelings are. As one of a characters in the movie says, people move on, they will not remember you in just two or three days. That’s what Li An wants to tell us. A cruel story.
