In today’s class, we talked about ‘align’ and ‘agree’. You were still unsure about these words, so I will give you more examples and explanations.

Vocabulary

Agree – 3 common meanings (You can find this information at https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/agree#:~:text=%E2%80%8B,you%20have%20the%20same%20opinion)

1) to have the same opinion as somebody; to say that you have the same opinion

  •  agree with somebody  – totally agree with you!
  •  agree about/on somethingYou can’t expect them to agree on everything.
  •  agree with somebody about/on somethingHe agreed with them about the need for change.
  •  agree with somethingMany experts agree wholeheartedly with this statement.
  •  agree (that)… All parties agree (that) urgent action is required.
  • We agreed (that) the proposal was a good one.

2) to approve of something because you think it is right

  •  agree with doing something – I don’t agree with hitting children as a punishment.
  •  agree with somethingI’m not sure I agree with the government’s policy on this.

3) to say ‘yes’; to say that you will do what somebody wants or that you will allow something to happen

  • I asked for a pay rise and she agreed.
  •  agree to something The government has finally agreed in principle (= agreed in general but not in detail) to the terms of the deal.
  • Do you think he’ll agree to their proposal?
  •  agree (that)… She agreed (that) I could go early.
  •  agree to do something He reluctantly agreed to pay for the damage.

Align – 2 common meanings (You can find this information at https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/align?q=align

1) to arrange something in the correct position, or to be in the correct position, in relation to something else, especially in a straight line

  • Make sure the shelf is aligned with the top of the cupboard.
  • The top and bottom line of each column on the page should align.

2) to change something so that it is not against something else

  • Domestic prices have been aligned with those in world markets.
  • We have changed some school rules to align with government policies.
  • You should align your behaviour with your mother’s instructions.
