Vocabulary

gathering dust (verb phrase) – something is not used
Recently, I have been selling a lot of things which would otherwise have been gathering dust

punish / penalize (verb) – inflict a penalty
While these words mean the same thing, it is common to use ‘punish’ when talking about children and ‘penalize’ when talking about crimes.
Her mom will punish her for not doing her homework.
You will be penalized for driving too fast.
