People tend to compare different covid-19 vaccines by their efficacy rates. They choose to use the ones with high efficacy rates. However, efficacy rates are not that reliable, because efficacy trials can be done in various circumstances. For example, efficacy trials of Johnson＆Johnson’s vaccine took place as variants of covid-19 emerged and became dominant infections. As a result, its efficacy rate is only 66%, the lowest rate among all the six vaccines. Moderna’s efficacy trial was done when the infection rates were low, therefore its efficacy rate is high (95%). As its nearly impossible to conduct all efficacy trials at the same time, in the same parts of the world and with the same inclusion criteria, it is unwise to decide whether to use a vaccine according to its efficacy rate.
However, it doesn’t mean that efficacy rates are meaningless. All the vaccines have 100% efficacy rates against death and hospitalization, which means not one fully vaccinated person was hospitalized or died from covid-19. We should admit that the real purpose of being vaccinated is to give our body enough protection against death and hospitalization. The best vaccine right now for you is the vaccine you are offered.
