Life

How is your life during graduate study?

First of all, I like the academic environment here very much. It’s the best hospital in China and a top hospital in the world. Doctors and professors are kind and knowledgeable. Instead of working in regular hours, they dedicate themselves to clinical work, medical research and teaching. I really appreciate their classes at night because I know they sacrifice their free time. They set a good example for me. Although the past three years have seen my life become quite busy, I have enjoyed the whole process as I am able to see my progress step by step.

As a medical student majored in Neurology, I can not only see patients with common diseases such as cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage, but also some rare diseases such as ALS, CMT, HNPP. Every year, more than 100 ALS patients visit our hospital and get treatment in our ward. I learn a lot from them. They suffer from inconvenience, depression, worry and anxiety after diagnosis. Some patients care a lot about their young children, some hope to be with their families for a longer time and others worry about the high cost of long-term medical treatment. Every time when I see the desire for life in their eyes, I tell myself to study hard, and do more research in this field. My dream is that, one day, ALS will no longer be regarded as a silent killer and that it becomes curable, and won’t affect the quality of the patient’s life and overall lifespan.

Besides the academic environment, I’m quite fond of the military school lifestyle. With teachers and students being quite active in sports, there are many people running and playing basketball in the playground. I used to have sedentary life and was overly focused on my studies during university, whilst under the pressure to study hard. But now, I spend one hour in running or walking everyday to ensure that I am leading a healthy lifestyle. So as you can see, my life has certainly undergone big changes.

Also, the school provides us a very safe place to work and study. As a resident doctor, I am often on duty late at night or collecting records till the early morning. However, it’s very safe here so I don’t need to worry at all when going back to the dormitory building late at night.

The most unforgetable thing in clinical work

There are many touching stories from my ward. One of my patient is 45 years old. She is diagnosed as ALS and has difficulty in speaking and swallowing. Her daughter is going to have the college entrance examination in June. When she was receiving treatment in our ward, she worried a lot and wanted to go back home to take care of her daughter as soon as possible. I was deeply touched by this mother’s love. I also met another patient in ICU. She suffered from severe myasthenic crisis and doesn’t have medical insurance. It costs a lot when a patient needs ventilator, parenteral nutrition, IVIg, etc. Although they don’t have much money, her husband never gave up and borrowed money from friends, sold cars, and did whatever he could, to pay for the medical care.

Their stories make me think about the goal of medicine. When I was reading medical articles, I saw that people describe the goal of medicine as the relief of pain and suffering, the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, the forestalling of death and the promoting of a peaceful death, and the cure of disease when possible and the care of those who can not be cured. From my perspective, in short, the goal of both medicine and medical workers is to relieve suffering and make life longer and easier.
