The 15 minutes between life and death

There is a common scenario in TV series that goes, doctor tell the patient’s families outside the emergency room that the patient will lose life if he arrived at hospital 30 minutes later. Recently, a stroke study published in JAMA indicates that some people would be survived or able to avoid disability if treatment starts 15 minutes earlier. The study involves 6756 ischemic stroke patients(female:51.2%, male: 48.8%, mean age: 71 years old) and shows that if the time between symptom onset and the beginning of treatment can be shortened by 15 minutes, the number of death will decrease 8, and the numbers of patients who are able to leave hospital by themselves and who has self-care ability after treatment increase by 11 and 9, respectively.

Stroke is the biggest killer in China. More than 2 million Chinese died of stroke in 2016. Based on the results of the study mentioned above, thousands of stroke patients can get better treatment outcomes if it can start 15 minutes earlier.

How to get treatment in time? The study shows that hospital is an important factor. Usually, treatment delay time is shorter in hospitals which are experienced in stoke and have professional certification. Besides, the start of treatment is prone to delay in after-hours. Additionally, living alone or unable to spot stroke symptoms also contributes to treatment delay.

The F.A.S.T. principle provides an easy way to spot stroke. The four alphabet represent face drooping, arm weakness, speech and time to call, respectively. Make an emergency call or go to emergency room immediately when stroke is spotted. Remember, time is life!
