From what I have seen in China, chinses children always have a packed schedule. When I was a student in primary school, I had to wake up early cause the first class of a school day would start from 7:40 AM, and usually I have 7 or 8 classes in a day, which means I can only go home after 6pm when the last class ends. The night of a school day was exactly used for doing homework, as we must hand the homework to the teacher in the next day.
There are also some other classes for children who want to develop their other interests in weekend. Some of these kinds of classes are a bit selective, we even need to pass the exam to get the qualification to the class.
However, when it comes to the motivation of having a huge number of classes, I think the most important part should be the expectations from their parents. Chinese parents are good at setting incredibly high expectations to their children, they want us to be as good as possible, thus it also gives strong stresses to their children.

However, when it comes to the motivation for having a huge number of classes, I think the most important part should be / is probably / is likely the expectations from their parents. Chinese parents are good at setting incredibly high expectations for their children / good at having high expectations of their children, and they want us to be as good as possible, thus it also gives a lot of stress / pressure / gives a heavy burden to their children.
