English is often FIGURATIVE, and uses METAPHORS:

Some words that you think are not very useful, like SCRAPE. Can actually be used in a METAPHOR or FIGURATIVELY, quiet often.

Ask the teacher to use all the CUT words, in examples that are not LITERAL.

Vocabulary

rough – not smooth

eg: The road was really rough, and I was drinking water. But It spilled on me.

eg: The bricks on the Great Wall are rough.

Understanding How Words Work, In English:

English has many many, words. Sometimes too many. But, they are easier than you think.

There are really only two kinds of words:  You can ask… “Is that a general word?” or “Is that a specific word?”

General: – Has a big meaning, can be used for many things.

eg: Cut – to break, separate or divide, with a sharp object

There are many kinds of cuts.

eg: Cut in line.

eg: The internet was cut off.

eg: He was cut out of the deal, because they didn’t like his ideas.

eg: Cut it out (stop doing sth.)

Specific: – Smaller meaning, can be used for less things.

Chop – a big strong cut

eg: He chopped some meat and cooked it.

Slice – long and thin cut

eg: Slice that pizza into 12 slices.

eg: I sliced my arm on that door, it’s really sharp.

Bisect – cut into two equal pieces (Geometry, Shapes)

eg: They decided to bisect the room equally for the two teams.

Scrape – when a rough object pushes hard against something, and cuts or damages it.

eg: Let the kids play in the grass, so they don’t scrape their knees.

Papercut (N.) – a cut by a piece of paper

eg: When I was a kid I got a few papercuts.

Pierce – to cut or punch a hole through something

eg: You’re safe, bullets can’t pierce this special clothing.

eg: I got my ears pierced when I was studying in University.

eg: I just have my ears pierced.

Cooking:   Dice(small squares), Mince(Very tiny pieces) , Julienne(French, long thin sticks), Butterfly(Special cut for shrimp), Skin(cut off skin), Debone (Cut out bones)
