F2F Class Notes (Tony)

Next Class Focus

Practice Clarifying Questions:   To clear up the semantics problems.

Vocabulary

squeeze it in (V.) –  ( to add an event, to a full or “tight” schedule)

eg: I didn’t take any English classes, because I didn’t want to squeeze it in.

Is this really right?.   ( SEMANTICS )

Semantics – different views about the meaning of the word

eg: That’s just semantics. Don’t worry about it.

eg: Let’s not argue about semantics.

eg: English has a lot of semantics, so it’s hard to study.

eg: I didn’t take any English classes, because I didn’t want to squeeze it in.

If the main Subject is CLASSES, then why is the second subject, IT

(Because, CLASSES is Plural and IT is Singular)

But…

You could say, that IT is the IDEA of taking English classes, (In general)

Or…

You could say IT is for EACH CLASS

So…

There are many ways this COULD or COULD NOT BE 100 % CORRECT.

eg: Jeff: Hey do you know where that store is?

Some Guy: Yeah, that store is just UP the street.

Some Guy’s Friend: No, No, that store is Just DOWN the street.

( As they both point in the same direction )

( This is Semantics:     the two guys are both right,  just in their own mind. UP or DOWN does not really tell me where to go) These are directions in their mind, from CONTEXT.

Just like: The bathroom is down the hall and to the left.

Grammar

No need to repeat the subject:

I like Jeff, Jeff is nice. – I like Jeff, he is nice.
