(It is strongly implied that they were drinking alcohol)

Natural English:
I got it – I will (take care of it/ handle it/ do it/ pay for it)
eg: Don’t worry about lunch, I got it.
eg: You don’t need to do the dishes, I got it. (I will wash the dishes)
Jeff’s eg: Let’s go to the steakhouse, I got it the bill.
Let’s go to the steakhouse, don’t worry about how much it will cost, I got it.
She told me her car was broken broke-down, I told her “I got it.” Then I fixed it for her with a potato.” Tony: “What, no way. You fixed it with a potato?”
Grammar
I drank a lot because we celebrated his birthday. / I drank a lot because we were celebrating his birthday.
Suggestion:
Use Finished Tense, to describe events in order on a timeline. A, B, C, 1, 2, 3. I went home. I wrote an email, then I went to the store.
Use Continuous Tense, to describe events happening at the same time, or in the middle of sth. else
A (while) B. A, (F), B, C
I was cooking and listening to some music.
I was cooking then Jeff dropped the bowl.
Jeff was working when his son called, and said, “dad, you missed my college graduation. ”
