Vocabulary

Badminton is very popular in China.     Very + ADJ.

complicated – fu za

eg: In high school we had too many complicated handshakes. So we just did a fist bump instead.

hectic – crazy and busy

eg: The indoor place for basketball is very hectic, it’s hard to book a court.

court – the area that you play sports on, usually a floor made of wood or other material, not grass.

eg: The basketball court is really busy right now.

field – the area that you play sports on made of grass.

eg: We booked the soccer field, but someone is on it now.

badminton – a sport like tennis, with a longer and lighter racquet, the net is higher, and you use a birdie, not a ball.

eg: Badminton can be played one on one or two on two.

eg: Badminton use a birdie, not a ball.

Bump out – a basketball game, where you need to shoot free throws and make it before the person behind you makes it. If they make it before you do, you are out. The game continues until only one person is left.

eg: We played bump out a lot in high school.

hacky sack – a bag filled with things like dried beans, that you kick into the air.

Speaking exercise

Jianzi has a thing like a birdie, it has long feathers we play it with 3 or 4 people. We can kick it to each other. But someone is stand in the middle and the others just stand around him for one meters. Just kick it to the middle people and the middle people can kick it to another. Another way to play it is have 2 person to play, you can put a net in the middle between us, and we can kick it to the other side, and the other one can kick it back to me, if it is on the ground it’s lose.


Jianzi is a thing like a birdie, it has long feathers and you can play it with 3 or 4 people. You kick it to each other, but someone stands in the middle and the others stand about one meter away. They kick it to the middle person and the middle person kicks it to another. Another way to play it is with 2 people. You can put a net in the middle, and kick it to the other side, and the other person kicks it back, if it hits the ground you lose.

Jianzi is like hacky sack, with a (badminton) birdie.
