Vocabulary

Bitter (adj): 1- Someone who is bitter is angry and unhappy because they cannot forget bad things that happened in the past. 2- A bitter experience causes deep pain or anger.
E.g.:I feel very bitter about my childhood and all that I went through.
E.g.:She’d suffered terribly over the years but it hadn’t made her bitter.
E.g.:Failing the final exams was a bitter disappointment for me.
E.g.:She learned through bitter experience that he was not to be trusted

Bittersweet (adj): 1- containing a mixture of sadness and happiness.
E.g.: The creators of Game of Thrones have recently said the end of the show will be bittersweet.

Predictable (adj): 1- Something that is predictable happens in a way or at a time that you know about before it happens.
E.g.: Comets appear at predictable times.

Adept (adj): 1- having a natural ability to do something that needs skill:
E.g.: She’s very adept at dealing with the media.
E.g.: Tamsin Palmer gave a technically adept performance on the piano.

Menace (n): 1- something that is likely to cause harm. 2- a dangerous quality that makes you think someone is going to do something bad.
E.g.: Drunk drivers are a menace to everyone.
E.g.: Dogs running loose are a public menace.
E.g.: The government needs to deal with the menace of industrial pollution.
E.g.: He had a slight air of menace which made me uneasy.
E.g.: He spoke with a hint of menace.

Sweep it under the rug (id): 1- to hide something damaging or unpleasant and try to keep it secret.
E.g.: This scandal can’t be swept under the rug.

Pageantry (n): 1- impressive and colorful ceremonies.
E.g.: She loved the pageantry and tradition of the monarchy.

Hazard (n): 1- something that is dangerous and likely to cause damage.
E.g.: The busy traffic entrance was a hazard to pedestrians.

The elephant in the room (id): 1- an obvious problem that no one wants to discuss.
E.g.: I don’t want to ask the question, but it is the big elephant in the room.

In light of: 1- because of.
E.g.: In the light of recent incidents, we are asking our customers to take particular care of their personal belongings.
