F2F Class Notes October 11th (Ben)

I’d like to talk about parenting. Sometimes, it’s a contradiction to be parents. On one hand, you want to give your children as much love as possible. But on the other hand, you don’t want to spare the rod and spoil the child.
If you discipline a child, you do show him good discipline. But I think you should always act within a reasonable range.

Unfortunately, I do see bad parenting once in a while. One day, when I was at the beach, I heard an angry father had kicked his son just because the boy had got lost while his father was playing on his smartphone.

Getting lost is already traumatising and I don’t think the kid needed to be punished on top of that.
It infuriated me and made my blood boil. Parents should know children have very permeable brains. They suck in whatever you give to them.
If you read them a poem repeatedly, they can recite by heart it someday.

1. If you mistreat them repeatedly, they will only learn to hate you, this world and themselves.
2. If you mistreat them repeatedly, how are they supposed to learn to love themselves and this world?

There are also these (kinds of) parents who force their own views on their children.

When you want your children to play the piano but they just want to play with a screwdriver instead, you should just let them because it also helps them acquire handy skills. Only by doing what they like will they want/be willing to walk the extra mile.

I wasn’t a mother yet two years ago. Back then, I had no idea what having children meant. But now, it’s crystal-clear to me that children can’t be treated as property and you can’t make them live on your terms just because you gave them life.
