F2F Class Notes November 10th (Ben)

Vocabulary

greetings

Chinese and Japanese people greet each other in different ways.

You are expected to answer if someone asks you…

How are you? How have you been ? How are you doing?  Is everything alright?

  • How are you?
  • I’m fine. I’ve been busy recently. What about you?
  • Same old, same old. Nothing new, really.
  • Anyway, it’s nice to see you.
  • Yeah, you too.
  • Well, gotta go. See you around
  • See you !

“I gotta go” = I got to go = I have to go

You are not expected to answer is someone says…

Nice to see you ! Long time no see. It’s good to see you again. Haven’t seen you for a while!

You only say “How do you do?” to people you meet for the first time. The appropriate answer is “How do you do?”

  • My name is Jim. How do you do?
  • How do you do? My name’s Ben.

End of a conversation

  • Well, it was nice seeing you again
  • Yeah, same here
  • Hope we can catch up again soon
  • Sure, that’d be great
  • Okay, gotta go. Let’s keep in touch, ok?
  • Yeah, sure. No worries/ No problem
  • Cool. See you around !
  • See ya ! Take care. Bye bye!

To someone closer
