collateral damage = losses or damage during an operation (successful or unsuccessful)
The mission was a success but there was some collateral damage, including several casualties.
to suggest –> a suggestion
to suppose 假设 –> a supposition
He told me that he had to go to Pudong today, so I think he will be late for the meeting. But that’s just a supposition, he might actually be on time. So my suggestion is that we wait for him for 10 minutes.
to assume 认为 = to believe something is true, even without proof (to make an assumption)
My wife will come with her best friend, so I assume/suppose/think we will be 4 tonight.

- You’re giving me 500-dollar chips because I’m black?
- No, sir, I just assumed that…
- You assumed that a brother [a black guy] coming here cannot afford more than 500-dollar chips !

assume –> an assumption
a hypothesis = an idea that is partly true, but not fully proven yet
We don’t know how gravity really works, but there is a hypothesis that it is due to a particle called a “gravitron”, that we have never discovered so far.
a casualty = someone who dies in an accident or at war
The fire at Hongkou Stadium made no casualties.
break out = 突然发生
The fire broke out in the morning
to engulf 吞没 = (to put in a gulf)
The house was totally engulfed by the fire.
put out a fire = to kill a fire
reason = why something takes place (跟人有关联)
cause = how something takes place
The cause of the fire was a lit cigarette butt. The reason the fire happened was because nobody put out the cigarette butt.
