used (past of use)

What did you use to learn English?

I used my phone to take notes.

used to + 动词 (过去式, many times OR a long time in the past)

When I was a child, I finished school at 4.30. = I used to finish school at 4.30. (many times)

I am a teacher now, but I was a consultant before. = I used to be a consultant. (a long time)

I used to have breakfast this morning => WRONG ! –> I had breakfast this morning.

We often use “used to” when we speak about childhood or a previous life.

When I was a child, I used to like crying and I used to want to become a princess. I used to use my mom’s makeup and I used to play with my grandma and used to eat ice-cream.


A countable noun is never used by itself. It always comes with A, THE or ____S

(or a possessive article – my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their, Ben’s, Penny’s, etc)
