in a pickle – in a tricky or difficult situation, where it is hard to see a way out of it. eg: “He was really in a pickle, he knew his boss would think he broke the computer, even though it was his colleague’s dog that broke it.” “If I don’t finish my portfolio this month, I’ll really be in a pickle.”

phrase – a few words often used together eg: go to the store

idiom – cheng yu – a phrase with a new meaning, as used in informal language

eg: what’s up – what is happening

chill out – relax eg: “I can’t seem to chill out when I speak English.”

take off – leave eg: “My teacher Jenny took off, it really made me sad.”

bummed out – sad or disappointed eg: “I was bummed out when he didn’t want to hear my explanation.”

keep me posted – tell sb. about anything new that happens

 stay on the beaten path – stay with what is popular, well known or often done
