Vocabulary

period of time – from 5pm to 6pm

“During this period sales are usually slow.” So, sales are slow from the period of August until November?” “Yes! They are slow during that period.”

point in time – at 5pm

eg: “At what point did you know you went the wrong way?” I knew I went the wrong way, when I saw a sign for Zhaojiabang Rd.”

Grammar

need to – because need is a verb, we can’t just put another verb after it.

eg:  I need eat       need and eat are both verbs. So they can’t be put together. You must use To.

eg: “I need to eat.”      “We didn’t need to go out.”

ACTIVE VERB TENSES

Simple Present

I see you. (Present Tense, Action)

I like soccer. I eat dinner after work. (Present simple Tense, Usually, Non-Action)

There are 12 months in a year. The Sun rises from the East. (General Truths)

The train leaves at 4pm.   (Future time, using Present tense)

Present Continuous

I am playing soccer now. (Present Continuous) (doing something now)

Simple past

We visited the museum yesterday. I got off work at 5pm today. (Completed Action)

Past Continuous

I was cooking dinner. (Action that took place over a period of time)

We were eating dinner when she told me. (Past Action interrupted by another action)

I was testing a system when my colleague asked me to go out for a meeting.  (Past Action interrupted by another action)

Repeating a sentence as a question.

Sales are slow.     Are sales slow? (they just told you they are slow, so don’t directly ask) So, Sales are slow? (use tone to ask the question)
