Vocabulary

Haunted house – a scary house full of ghosts. The house is haunted by ghosts

e.g. Cynthia is going to a theme park next week with a Halloween-theme. She’s looking forward to going inside the haunted house.

Spooky – scary

e.g. Haunted houses are spooky.

Comedy movies – funny movies

e.g. Cynthia likes comedy movies.

Drama series – television series in which a lot of dramatic events happen

e.g. Cynthia should watch less Korean drama series and more American comedy series.

Fairytale – magical stories with witches, princesses, princes and dwarfs

Castle – a big, stone building in which princes and princesses live in fairytales

e.g. Cynthia wants to live in a castle.

Subtitles – a transcript or a translation of the spoken words in movies

e.g. Cynthia has to watch modern family with subtitles, otherwise she’ll have difficulty understanding what’s being said.

To bump into something or someone – to accidentally hit something or someone with your body

e.g. In Cynthia’s Korean drama, the princess bumps into the prince and that’s how they met each other.

Arranged marriage – when the families of two people decide that they have to marry each other

e.g. A lot of arranged marriages still happen in India.

Episode – a series is divided into different episodes

e.g. Modern family has 24 episodes per season.

Ancient – very, very old

e.g. A lot of Chinese series are set in ancient times.

Army – the military , all the soldiers are in the army

It’s all gone – it’s not here anymore

e.g. There were a lot of baozi in the classroom before. But now they’re all gone.
