Vocabulary 词汇


Vertigo – a condition that causes a person to be dizzy, usually because of heights

Ex. People with vertigo cannot go on rooftops because the height will make them dizzy.

Nausea – the feeling of needing to vomit

Ex. Many medicines list nausea as a side-effect.

Nauseous – felling as if you need to vomit

Ex. Going on roller-coasters (过山车) makes me feel nauseous.

Short-sighted – only able to view things that are close

Ex. People who are short sighted cannot drive without glasses.

Far-sighted – only able to view things that are far

Ex. People who are far-sighted cannot read without glasses.

Heart rate – the rate at which your heart beats

Ex. People’s heart rates spike during exercise.

Cactus – a spiky plant that grows in hot climates, 仙人掌

Ex. The spikes on cacti are actually their leaves.

Aloe – a special kind of cactus used to heal wounds and to moisturize skin

Ex. Many people apply aloe to their faces, especially to remove redness.

Edible – able to be eaten

Ex. Although Aloe is normally used topically (on top of the skin), it is also edible.

Layer – 层

Ex. Layered cakes look especially beautiful when they are cut.

Ex. After a sunburn, the top layer of skin dies.

Peel – to remove a layer from something

Ex. My sunburn was so bad that my skin began to peel.

Ex. Monkeys peel bananas in the opposite direction.

Ex. Some people regularly go to the spa for a chemical peel to remove the top layer of dead skin and look more youthful.
