the butt of jokes = a person who is the target of jokes or ridicule from others
E.g.
For a very long time, Tom was the butt of jokes in his office, due to his lack of social skills.
to root for the underdog = to support a competitor which has a seemingly small chance of success.
E.g.
Everybody likes a winner, so not many people root for the underdog.
compilation n = a collection of similar items
E.g.
His latest album was really just a compilation of his old greatest hits.
to catch a break = to get an opportunity, to get lucky
E.g.
Harvey Pekar worked hard all his life but never caught a break.
creative outlet n = a way to spend one’s creative energy
tongue-in-cheek = jokingly, not in a serious way
E.g.
His tongue-in-cheek comments were amusing for a while, but later started becoming annoying.
collector’s item = something which is of interest to collectors, something rare and valuable
