Eg.  Let’s set off some fireworks. (let’s light up some fireworks.)

Eg.  I’m going to set off my rocket/the rocket later today.

“cool as a cucumber”:  very relaxed/ kept your cool.

Eg.  In my office everyone is cool as a cucumber.

Eg.  All the kids were screaming, but Nobu sat there cool as a cucumber.

Eg.  We went to a haunted house, and he was still cool as a cucumber.

“not my cup of tea”:  it’s not my favorite.

Eg.  Fishing is not Harmony’s cup of tea.

Eg.  Dancing in the club is not my cup of tea.

 

Cup of tea:  favorite.

Eg.  Fishing is Nobu’s cup of tea.

Eg.  Cooking and eating is my cup of tea.

“out to lunch”:  they’re not thinking./  your brain went to lunch.

Eg.  Today’s meeting was really boring, and Johnny was out to lunch the whole time.

Eg.  We are always out to lunch when we hear someone’s speech.

“a bad egg”:  a bad influence/ someone who is always in trouble.

Eg.  That kid/person is a bad egg.

Eg.  Some old colleague became a bad egg to new comers.

“everything but the kitchen sink” = you have packed/brought a lot of things./ it’s almost as if you packed up the entire house.

Eg.  Our customer purchased everything but the kitchen sink.

over my dead body”: it’s not allowed/ there’s no way you can do that.

Eg.  When my daughter brought home that guy to meet us, I told her “over my dead body”.

“an arm and a leg”:  something that is very expensive.

Eg.  I wanted to go to Japan, but the flights cost an arm and a leg.

the ol’ (old) ball and chain”:  a negative way to describe your spouse.

Eg. I can’t go to some luxury restaurant because I have an old ball and chain at home.

Ball and chain:  an old way of keeping prisoners in one spot, a large ball attached to their ankle.

Spouse:  a wife/husband.  (gender neutral)

Eg.  My spouse is my wife.

“tie the knot”:  to get married.

Eg.  It seems they are tying the knot very soon.

Courting—more formal.  Usually it ends in marriage.

Elopement:  running off secretly to get married.  (sometimes without parent’s agreement.)

Eg.  They eloped last weekend.

Shotgun marriage/wedding:  happens quickly because the woman is pregnant.

“it’s easier to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission” (not specific situation)

  • Easier to just do it, then get forgiven rather than waiting around to get permission.
