Chuyi
I watch it for my English – I’ve been watching it to improve my English speaking skills.
I’m graduate – I’ve graduated
Subtitles – the written words of what’s spoken on screen
e.g. Chuyi needs subtitles when she watches the Big Bang Theory.
Illiterate – when you can speak a language, but can’t write it
e.g. Tanya speaks fluent Chinese, but she can’t write it. She’s illiterate in Chinese.
I come here at Thursday and Friday – I come here on Thursday and Friday
I go there to fit my body – I go there to become fit
I have went there only at nighttime – I’ve only been there during the evenings
To exercise – doing sports, training your body, becoming fit
e.g. When Chuyi goes to thai box training, she’s exercising.
Out of breath – when you can’t breathe properly
e.g. Chuyi doesn’t like to go running, because after five minutes she’s usually out of breath.
Podcast – a talkshow like on the radio where people talk about all sorts of stuff
e.g. When Tanya goes running, she always listens to podcasts.
I don’t like eat what I bake – I don’t like to eat what I bake
Trimester – a study period with exams at the end of it. Semester means there’s two per year. Trimester means there’s three per year.
e.g. Shanghai University is the only university in Shanghai with three study periods (three trimesters).
e.g. Chuyi’s university only has two semesters
Crumbs – little bits of food
e.g. Chuyi and Tanya like to snack food in bed. We have a lot of crumbs in our beds.
I’m basically no speak Shanghainese – I basically don’t speak Shanghainese a lot
To exaggerate – to do something over the top
e.g. A lot of Americans seem to exaggerate their accent.
