When I was an elementary school student, the Shanghai government arranged/organized/planned for a student group from America to visit our school. In this group I met an American boy whose family was from China. His mother tongue/native language was English and not Chinese. I felt strange when I saw him with white people and asked him “You should be Chinese, not American. Why did you come with these white people?” He told me, “I was born in America and I live there, they are my classmates.” I said, “But you have the same appearance as me and you speak Chinese. So you are Chinese”. He seemed puzzled, “I can speak Chinese but just with my family, and in fact, this is the first time I came to China .” I felt surprised and I could not understand what he said. I thought/guessed/assumed he did not understand me too. Later, I learned the history of America from books, then I understood his story. There are a lot of people living in America, they have different skin and come from different countries, and they created America like a big melting pot/new world.

melting pot = term used for countries like the USA where many people from all over the world came together to live in one country

same as

eg. Claire has the same dress as Judy.

eg. Your phone is the same as mine.
