Vocabulary

Minus 5 degrees – means that it’s five degrees below zero

e.g. Winters in Belgium are pretty cold. Sometimes it’s minus 5 degrees.

Excruciating – intense, painfully  

e.g. Summers in Taiwan are excruciatingly hot.

To elaborate on something – to say more about something

e.g. Can you elaborate on this topic?  

Night markets – markets at night

e.g. Taiwan has a lot of famous night markets.

Antiques – fancy, old things

e.g. This couch is from the fifteenth century, it’s an antique.

Knock-off – a fake

e.g. On Taobao, you can buy a lot of designer knock-off handbags.

Prefecture – different name for a district

e.g. Japan is divided into different prefectures.

Spectator – a person who’s watching something

e.g. Speed-eating contests are popular spectator events in Japan. This means that a lot of people like to watch speed-eating contests in Japan.

Convicted – when a judge is convinced that someone did something bad, he or she will convict the person

e.g. This criminal was convicted. The judge says he has to go to jail for ten years.

Cruel – very mean, bad-spirited

e.g. Someone who has been convicted of animal cruelty has been very bad to animals.
