Vocabulary

Mulled wine – hot red wine with spices, typically drunk around winter or Christmas

e.g. Tanya loves mulled wine.

Glutinous rice – 糯米

e.g. A lot of traditional Chinese dishes that are eaten around Chinese New Year are made with glutinous rice.

Romanization – to convert Chinese letters to a Roman or Western alphabet.

e.g. Instead of translating tangyuan from Chinese to English, we just call it “tangyuan” in English (instead of keeping with the Chinese alphabet and writing 汤圆)。

Television series – 连续剧

e.g. I really like to watch epic series like Game of Thrones.

To dub – when a movie’s soundtrack has been translated in another language

e.g. So this German movie has been dubbed, so it seems like the actors are speaking English.

Subtitles – 字幕

e.g. It’s really good practice to watch English movies with subtitles.

Veep – the vice price president, 副总统

e.g. Veep is a short way of referring to the vice president.
