Vocabulary

Scam (n/v): 1- an illegal plan for making money, especially one that involves tricking people
E.g.: My friend fell into the Chinese Tea Scam.

Non-profit (adj): 1- not intended to make a profit, but to make money for a social or political purpose or to provide a service that people need.
E.g.: We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of ocean mammals.

For-profit (adj): 1- used to describe an organization or service that exists to make a profit:
E.g.: The law here allows hospitals to be operated on a for-profit basis.

Profitable (adj): 1- resulting in or likely to result in a profit or an advantage.
E.g.: Over the years it has developed into a highly profitable business.

Mainstream (adj): 1- considered normal, and having or using ideas, beliefs, etc. that are accepted by most people:
E.g.: This is the director’s first mainstream Hollywood film.

Counterculture (n): 1- a way of life and a set of ideas that are completely different from those accepted by most of society, or the group of people who live this way.
E.g.: The hippie movement was one of the most influential countercultures of the 20th century.

Decry (v): 1- to criticize something as bad, without value, or unnecessary:
E.g.: Lawyers decried the imprisonment of several journalists.

Greed (n): 1- a very strong wish to continuously get more of something, especially food or money:
E.g.: I don’t know why I’m eating more – it’s not hunger, it’s just greed!

Enthusiast (n): 1- a person who is very interested in and involved with a particular subject or activity.
E.g.: Fashion enthusiasts gather here every season to see upcoming trends.

Legitimacy (n): 1- the quality of being reasonable and acceptable.
E.g.: She challenged the legitimacy of the previous speaker’s arguments.
