Vocabulary 词汇

Dynasty – a period of time in ancient history, normally in reference to China
Ex. The Silk Road was developed during the Han Dynasty.

Revolution – a sudden, radical, or complete change that is often violent
Ex. The revolution of 1911 gave rise to the Republic of China (中华民国).

Resolution – a statement of desire normally given at the beginning of the year, the noun form of resolve
Ex. Many people give up on their New Year’s resolutions after a few weeks.
Ex. After an hour-long discussion, the two presidents came forward with a resolution for the crisis.

Crisis – emergency, 危机
Ex. Many of the world’s poorest countries are facing a food crisis.

Intend – verb, to want or wish to do something
Ex. I never intended to hurt you.

Intent/Intention – noun, desire
Ex. It is the intent/intention of my company to grow 2.5% in the coming quarter.

Expressions 成语

To “come forward,” which comes from the physical act of walking toward a group of people, means that someone has something to say or admit.
Ex. After weeks of being silent, her husband came forward and admitted that has been cheating on her.

As a verb, the word “protest” is a physical action and is followed by for or against, depending on if the protest is in support or opposition of something. However, the verb “oppose” is simply an ideological difference and does not necessarily mean physically protesting.
