Vocabulary

the day after yesterday – Today

ex – the former one

ex president, ex girlfriend, ex colleague

preoccupied – busy with something else, already busy

eg: “I wasn’t paying attention, I’m a little preoccupied thinking about my work.”

procrastinate V. – to wait to do something

eg: “If you procrastinate too much, maybe you won’t have enough time to do it.”

put sth. off – to wait to do something

eg: “I was putting my work off until the last minute.”    “Don’t put it off too long, or you might forget it.”

Phrasal Verbs – 

bring up – to mention or talk about something

eg: I guess maybe you don’t wanna bring up American politics.”   “bring American politics up.”

Bring on — To cause something to happen, usually something negative. (The two parts of this phrasal verb can be separated by what’s happening.)

“His lung cancer was brought on by years of smoking.”   “Global warming was brought on by pollution.”

call off – to cancel something, an event, meeting, date, plan

eg: They called off the meeting, but I already arrived at their office.

Come up — To bring up a topic, or when something happens unexpectedly.

To bring up a topic: “I wanted to tell her that I got a new job but the chance never came up.”

Unexpected occurrence: “I was going to meet my friends for dinner, but something came up so I had to cancel.”
