downfall – to go from a high level to low level (often used with famous / big organisations)
eg. his greed led to his downfall

the bigger they are the harder they fall – the larger / higher level sth is, the worse the repercussions will be when they either physically or metaphorically fall.

blow – a negative shock / impact
eg. It was a blow to the economy

poisonous = toxic
eg. they have a really toxic relationship
eg2. alcohol and cigarettes are toxic to the human body

feast / smorgasbord

unfortunately / incredibly/ smartly / intelligently / amazingly / sadly / happily
eg. He could have stayed to fight, but smartly, he left.

vicious cycle – negative leads to more negative
eg. being depressed and obese is a vicious cycle

underweight / skinny / slim / fit / average / overweight / obese 

spill over – to impact / affect sth
eg. you don’t want your bad moods to spill over into your work
eg2. there was a lot of spill over

overlap – when 2 or more things have commonality
eg. there is overlap between Judy and my responsibilities
eg2. my timetable has some issue as one class overlaps with another

implication / ramification / repercussions / consequences = negative results
eg. the implications of you not controlling your moods is that you might lose your job and upset your friends and family

bare foot / bare feet 
eg. i love just walking around bare foot

organised (prepared everything) / put on (organised + paid)  / held (organised + ran)
eg. my mum organised for my whole family to come to a party which was put on by my company, and held at a famous hotel in Shanghai.

mansion – villa / huge house

done up – renovate / recondition / restore
eg. they did up the old 19th century building in preparation for the celebration

doing all the cooking / cleaning / housework / my reading 

came up – unexpectedly arose
eg. something came up so I can’t come to dinner tonight… sorry!!
eg2. I think I can make it tomorrow night… but if anything comes up I’ll let you know.

at some point / at some stage – at an unknown time
eg. I was sick all day today… I think it was something that I ate at some point last night

In actuality = actually / in fact
eg. Some people think that they are allowed to say anything online, but in actuality, some things that you say online are considered illegal.

it proves difficult = it was more difficult than expected
eg. raising a kid seemed easy but proved difficult in the end

meet up = meet (casual)

hand out = give (casual)
eg. i handed out the invitations to the party last week (give things)
eg2. some people take handouts from the government instead of getting jobs (get money)
