Vocabulary


Curator – usually used to describe the career of a person who specializes in selling and presenting art; the person in charge of art galleries

Ex. The museum curator organizes a new exhibition every two weeks.

Ivory Coast – also called Cote D’Ivoire, a west African country with a history of French colonialism.

Ex. For more than three decades after its independence from France, Ivory Coast was known for its religious and ethnic harmony, as well as its well-developed economy.

Ivory – the material made from the tusks of Elephants

Ex. Although the ivory trade is largely illegal, many piano are still manufactured with ivory keys.

Tusks- long, pointed teeth that extend past the mouth

Ex. Although Elephants are the most famous animals with tusks, some other animals with tusks include some species of Deer, Walruses, and wild Boar.

Walrus – an Arctic animal with thick skin and long tusks, 海豹

Ex. Male Walruses are infamous for their aggression toward one another.

Boar – wild pigs that are not domesticated (raised by humans)

Ex. Boars are to pigs as wolves are to dogs; in other words, the difference between boars and pigs is like the difference between wolves and dogs.

Infamous – famous for a bad reason

Ex. Bonnie and Clyde are two of the most infamous criminals in history.

P.O. Box – Post Office box, a rented mailbox that is at a location separate from a person’s home

Ex. Many celebrities prefer to have fan mail sent to a remote P.O. box rather than to their private residence (home).

Pilot – (verb) to launch, start, begin

Ex. T.V. shows generally test their popularity with a pilot episode.

Liberate – to free

Ex. The government refused to liberate the political prisoners.

Phrases


To “take to something” means to become a fan of something.

Ex. At first, I had to force my son to go to Piano lessons, but now he’s really taken to it.

The concept of a “roll-out” is like that of a “launch” or “pilot.” It comes from the tradition of rolling out a red carpet for something important.

Ex. After the roll-out, the new APP gained immense popularity.
